Groundwater Activities

READ THESE IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS!

·       Answer on notebook paper, or open a new Word document, and enter answers there.

·       If you use Word, save the document as [last name].groundwater in the Friedman/6Science folder on the student drive.

·       Be sure to start by typing a complete heading.

·       Number the items as they are numbered below.

Part 1 - Water Science for Kids:

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/earthgwquality.html

1. Draw a picture showing how groundwater contamination happens.

2. What are the four categories of groundwater contaminants? (hint - the first one is inorganic contaminants - you have to scroll down to see the others)

3. Draw a table that includes these headings:

Contaminant

How it gets in the water

What are the effects?

Fill out the table for a minimum of 5 contaminants.  You may do additional ones for extra credit.

4. Scroll down to the section called, "Physical characteristics of ground water."   For each the five characteristics listed, tell how you would measure or observe that characteristic.  If you can't remember, you may go to the Outdoor School's website: http://schools.fcps.org/outdoor/watertesting.html

Part 2:  Go to Groundwater Use in the USA

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/wugw.html

Use the information to answer the following:

     5. Name the top five states for water withdrawal in the year 2000.

6. What were the number 1, 2, and 3 biggest fresh groundwater withdrawals for the year 2000?  Name the uses and the amounts (see the side of the graph for units).

7. Which two fresh (surface and ground) water categories used more ground water than surface water in the year 2000?

8. What appears to be the relationship between population and groundwater withdrawals between 1950 and 2000?

Part 3 - Go to the Pesticides in Groundwater page:

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/pesticidesgw.html
